2009 Season Starts
The 2009 softball season started last weekend and included the 1st ever mens slow pitch league game.
This game resulted in a win for new team Central Electrics who beat Titans 19-7. The Centrals team used mostly new players but can rely upon the vast experience of Tony Gillespie and Jon Marley. Titans will need to bat more consistently in their future games but their many younger players showed great potential for the season ahead.
Tornadoes made their intentions clear of retaining their title by thumping Norman Piette Blue Sox 24-2 in the Co-ed Division 1. An excellent start of scoring 10 runs in the 1st innings and shutting out their opponents meant Tornadoes never looked back. Blue Sox should certainly improve in future games and use the ability of the Rihoy brothers to good effect.
NRG Rangers edged a very close game against ArcTech Panthers to win by 1 run in the same division. An exciting game throughout saw Rangers trailing at the end of each innings until the very last when with the pressure on Robin Van Tonder hit a home run to secure the necessary runs for a hard earned victory. Panthers can be very pleased with their 1st game in the higher division.
The Co-ed division 2 games had to contend with the heaviest of the afternoon rain . It saw victories for Mercator and Core Focus Rookies over Richmond Rogues and Generali Panthers respectively.
Both losing teams playing softball for the 1st time will certainly improve as the season progresses and Richmond can be very proud of themselves taking Mercator to the full seven innings.
