League Update – August 16th

16 August 2009 | News

After a full day of softball action NRG Rangers added the Sportingbet Mens Division Knock Out silverware to their trophy cabinet. Ship and Crown were their opponents who had won 2 previous games to get to the final; their 1st game being a tight 1 run victory over Titans.
Rangers already had one hand on the trophy leading 15-0 after 3 innings with the help of home runs from Paul Vaudin and Adrian Smith. Ship and Crown started scoring in the 4th innings but had a huge mountain to climb and although they managed to close the gap Rangers ran out comfortable winners 26-13.

In the only Sportingbet Mens League game last week NRG Rangers again tasted victory this time over Titans winning 13-11. This was Titans last league game of the season and they pushed the league champions hard to lose the game by a slim margin.

The Sportingbet Co-Ed Division 2 is heading for a play-off to decide the champions if Core Focus Rookies and Mercator can win their last remaining league games. Mercator were looking favourites to win the title but slipped up last week losing a closely fought game to Bulldogs in an extra innings.

Bulldogs came out the stronger of the 2 teams to lead 6-2 after 2 innings; Mercator’s runs coming from a Dom Bellis home run. Bulldogs pushed 6 runs across the plate in the 5th innings to lead 14-9. Mercator then shut out their opponents in the 6th innings and scored 5 runs of their own to tie the game going into the 7th innings. Neither team managed to score in the 7th innings thus meaning an extra innings starting with a runner on 2nd base was required to decide the game. Bulldogs batted 1st and scored 2 runs putting pressure on Mercator who could only reply with 1 run. 2 excellent catches at left field from Luke Staples helping his Bulldogs team to a fine victory.
