BSF National Mens Championships

BSF National Mens Championships 2015 – Day Two

Guernsey 18, EM Pulse 5

Guernsey’s first game of the day was against EM Pulse who they have never meet before.

EM Pulse started the game by getting 2 runs in the 1st. Guernsey replied with 5 runs, including a home run from Ollie Brehaut.

EM Pulse were shut out in the 2nd and 3rd innings by fly balls that were all caught in the outfield. Guernsey scored another 10 runs, including a home run from Miles Pengelley.

Again EM Pulse failed to score again in the 4th, with Guernsey scoring another 3 runs.

EM Pulse scored 3 more runs in the 5th inning but it was not enough to stay in the game.

Guernsey 23, Bristol Men 5

This game looked to be a tough one as Bristol Men had just come off the back of a win against Hoggs. Guernsey knew they would have to dig deep.

Guernsey started off strong and scored 4 runs in the 1st innings, with both Marc Rihoy and Joe Mauger scoring home runs. Bristol Men were then shut out with no runs scored.

Guernsey scored another 10 runs in the 2nd and 3rd inning with Charlie Smoot and Miles Pengelley adding to the home run tally in the 3rd. Again Bristol Men were shut out.

Another 4 runs scored for Guernsey in the 4th inning with Bristol Men replying with 5 runs. However, it looked like Bristol Men were certainly not on form for this game as these were the only runs scored from them.

Guernsey finished off with another 6 runs in the 5th inning, complete with Marc Rihoy grand slam!

Guernsey 3, Teabags 8

There is no information on this game.

Guernsey 0, Hoggs 7

Guernsey didn’t fare well in this semi-final. The Hoggs scored 2 runs in the 1st innings and their remaining runs in the 5th.

Guernsey failed to bat and therefore didn’t get any runs on the score board. A disappointing end for what had been a great tournament for Guernsey.

The other game in the Platinum semi-final was Puppies who beat Blue Steel 16 runs to 12.

Final: Platinum

BSF National Mens Championships 2015 – Day One

Again Guernsey travelled to the UK to compete in the BSF National Mens Championships in Moor Lane Sports Ground, Birmingham under new Island Coach Ryan De Jersey.

Guernsey has previously fared well in this competition displaying some good defensive play. Many of the squad have travelled to this championship before and they know they will have to dig deep and play hard to ensure they progress throughout the tournament.

The competition this year has been split into two groups of 5 teams where they play each other in their group plus 3 from the other group.

GROUP A GROUP B
Blue Steel Hoggs
Guernsey Puppies
Godzillas Bombers
EM Pulse Teabags
Cockney Rebels Bristol Men

After all 7 games, the 1st and 2nd in each group will play for the Platinum trophy and the 3rd and 4th in each group will play for the Gold trophy.
The 5th teams will play a placing game.

Blue Steel 4, Guernsey 12

Blue Steel were in the final last year playing Hoggs (where they lost 24-29) so Guernsey knew they had a fight on their hands. They also played them first last year!

Guernsey only scored 1 run in each of the first three innings but successfully shut Blue Steel out for five innings. Blue Steel scored all their 4 runs in the 6th inning.

There was 1 home run from Jordan Gallienne.

Guernsey 14, Hoggs 24

Guernsey played Hoggs in the semi-final last year so were well aware of their opponent’s strength.

In the 1st inning Hoggs scored 13 of their runs even though there were no errors from Guernsey – they just hit good, solid, base hits.

Hoggs took control of the game from the start with Guernsey’s score sheet looking like this:
2 runs in the 1st inning, 5 in the 2nd inning, 2 in the 3rd inning, 0 in the 4th inning, and 5 in the 5th inning

Guernsey 16, Cockney Rebels 6

Guernsey had control of this game from the start by scoring 5 runs in the 1st innings and shutting out the Rebels. They did the exactly the same in the 2nd innings.

In the 3rd and 4th innings neither teams scored. In the 5th Guernsey scored another 6 runs with Rebels only managing 1 run in reply. Rebels scored 3 more runs in the 6th but was not enough to stay in the game.

There were home runs from Charlie Smoot, and Jordan Gallienne and 2 from Ollie Brehaut.

Guernsey 17, Godzillas 3

Again, Guernsey had complete control of this game. They scored 5 runs in the 1st innings, 2 in the 2nd, 1 in the 3rd, and 3 in the 4th, 5th and 6th inning.

There were home runs from Marc Rihoy in the 1st inning, and 1 each from Mark Ingrouille and Ollie Brehaut in the 5th where they both had 2 RBI’s.

BSF National Mens Championships 2014 – Day Two

Godzillas 8, Guernsey 11

Guernsey started well scoring 3 in the 1st inning.  Godzillas responded with 3 of their own.  Although Guernsey were never behind it was a close game.  The 2nd inning saw them go 3 up and 3 down.  They kept a tight field though not allowing Godzillas to score in the 2nd.

With 1 down in the 3rd Marc Rihoy hit a home run scoring Shane Taylor and Charlie Smoot.

Guernsey then didn’t score in the 4th.

They scored 5 in the next inning with James Brehaut hitting a home run.  Godzillas responded with 3 of their own together with the 2 they scored the inning before making it 11-8.

In the last inning Godzillas had runners on 1 and 2 with 1 down.  Then with the tying run at the plate a strange incident happened where the 2nd base runner was called out for not being on the base when Ian Coutu pitched the ball.  The only explanation Guernsey came up with was he thought he was playing baseball.  With 2 down Guernsey got the third out to win the game 11 – 8.

Bristol Men 7, Guernsey 9

Despite Guensey scoring 5 in the 1st inning, including a 3 run homer by James Brehaut that scored Marc Rihoy, Ross Machon and Ben Youlton, and the fact that Bristol had only won 1 game at that point this would turn out to be another close game.

Miles Pengelley made an excellent catch for the 1st out running in hard on a right field hit taking it down by his feet and thereafter Bristol didn’t score in the 1st inning.  Guernsey went 3 up 3 down in the 2nd and Bristol got 1 run.  In the 3rd Guernsey had 4 hits scoring 3 runs but Bristol scored 4 of their own to make it 8 – 5.

Guernsey couldn’t score in the next 2 innings which made it very close going into the last inning as Bristol managed to claw 1 back in the 5th (6 innings as timed games). We managed to get 1 further run as Luke Mauger crossed the plate.  Bristol scored 1 more run themselves to make the final score 9 – 7.

Following completion of the round robin the placing’s were:

1 Guernsey
2 Puppies
3 Blue Steel
4 Hoggs

This meant that Guernsey played Hoggs in the Semi-Final and after losing to Hoggs 11 – 10 in the round robin (their only defeat) Guernsey were eager to turn the tables when it mattered.  Also having lost the final to Hoggs two years ago in this semi-final Guernsey would be looking to set the record straight.

Guernsey 8, Hoggs 14

Guernsey started positively scoring 2 runs by way of a homer from Marc Rihoy. Hoggs had scored 1 run and after a scoreless 2nd inning the score remained 2 – 1 to Guernsey.  Having home field advantage due to the seeding following the round robin Guernsey, took the field in the top of the 3rd and managed to get Hoggs out for 5 runs.  Guernsey unfortunately could only add 1 run though Ben Youlton in the next couple of innings and with Hoggs scoring another 6 they now led 12 – 3 after the 4th inning.

Guernsey rallied in the 5th with base hits from Luke Mauger, Ian Coutu and Ryan De Jersey for Shane Taylor to step up and drive the ball over 1st.  The Hoggs right fielder could not get to it and once it was passed him there was no doubt it would be a Grand Slam.  With 1 swing of the bat Guernsey had reduced their deficit to 5 runs and with no outs now had Hoggs in their sight.

Unfortunately with the next 3 batters being called out and no new innings called, the 6th inning would be the last.  Hoggs scored 2 runs with Guernsey needing 7 runs to tie.  Having scored 11 runs in 1st inning against Teabags on Saturday Guernsey believed it was possible. However, it was not to be.  Guernsey scored 1 from another home run by James Brehaut and the game ended 14 – 8.

After this game Guernsey placed 3rd overall.

The final was now between Hoggs and Blue Steel and in a very close game Hoggs came out on top and won the game 29 – 24.

BSF National Mens Championships 2014 – Day One

Blue Steel 10, Guernsey 12

First game of the day. Guernsey was the home team so fielded first. Blue Steel took advantage of the little knowledge Guernsey had of them and immediately got 6 runs on board by good base hitting.

The Guernsey men were a bit shaken up but came back strong to eventually win the game 12-10.

Guernsey 20, Teabags 6

This was a good game for Guernsey and the final score was Guernsey 20, Teabags 6 with Guernsey scoring 11 of those runs in the 3rd inning!

In another inning Shane Taylor ran down a very deep hit to centre right and managed to take an over the shoulder catch. With no runners on he held his arms aloft and in Eric Cantona style said “Are you not entertained?”.

There were home runs from the following:

James Brehaut (Grand Slam)
Luke Mauger (scoring 3 runs)
Ryan De Jersey (scoring 3 runs)
Marc Rihoy

Ian Coutu was pitching in this game as Dale Martel was resting due to an injury.

Cockney Rebels 9, Guernsey 10

Guernsey scored 4 runs in the 1st inning (with a home run from James Brehaut scoring 2 runs) and 1 run in the 2nd.

Guernsey’s score line stayed at 5 runs until their last bat (they were 5-9 down) when Marc Rihoy hit a home run scoring in 2 plus another one from James Brehaut who scored in 2 as well helping them to win the game 9-10.

Puppies 6, Guernsey 9

Puppies won the BSF National Championships last year after beating Hoggs in the final 24-7 so Guernsey was itching to win this game.

Guernsey scored 3 runs in the first inning, with Puppies not scoring at all.  In the 2nd Guernsey notched up another run and Puppies crossed the plate 3 times in reply. After the 4th Guernsey was up by 5 runs to 4.

Puppies could only score 2 runs in the last inning and with Guernsey being last at bat this was not enough to secure the win after Guernsey came back with 4 runs giving them the game.

Hoggs 11, Guernsey 10

The last game of the day; and a tough one.  Hoggs batted first and scored 1.  Guernsey then came up to bat: 3 up, 3 down.  Not the best start but after the 2nd inning the score was 4-3 to Guernsey.

The 3rd inning saw a repeat for the 1st for Guernsey with Hoggs scoring 4 to make the score line 4-7 Hoggs.  Hoggs then scored another 3 in the 4th with no reply from Guernsey; score 4-10 Hoggs.

Guernsey then started to come back in the 5th with 3 runs in reply to Hoggs’ 1.  In the 6th it was another “3 up, 3 down” for Guernsey.  In the last inning Hoggs didn’t score again but Guernsey could only manage another 3 runs to lose the game 10-11 to Hoggs.

National Men’s Slowpitch Championships 2014

Guernsey will once again be sending a men’s team to compete in the popular Single Sex National Championships. This year the BSF have has announced a record entry for its 2014 tournament. This year it is being held on the weekend of 12th & 13th July at Birmingham City University’s Moor Lane Sports Ground in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham.

All of the available places have been filled, and the tournament will break the previous record number of teams entered. The highest attendances have been when the tournament was played in Birmingham, supporting the BSF’s decision to move it from Farnham Park – where the Championship was played in 2013.

According to BSF Tournament Officer, Liz Graham, never before have so many places for the Single-Sex Nationals been filled so early in the season.

Guernsey’s Island Coach, Steve Mahy, has entered his selected Guernsey side into the higher level ‘competitive’ group and they will face some very strong opposition.

BSF National Men’s Slowpitch 2013 – Day 2

At the start of Day 2 Guernsey lost their first game again the Teabags 12-11.

This means they finish 5th overall and have to play Puppies at 11 o’clock and Teabags at 1 o’clock which count against the Round Robin table.  After these two games the next games will be 1st v 4th, 2nd v 3rd and 5th v 6th.

The scores so far: Guernsey lost the 11 o’clock game against Puppies 8 – 4.  They were 4 – 2 up when the Puppies hit 4 home runs over the fence!

They then won the next game against Teabags 13 – 8. Guernsey finish in 5th place as Godzillas won both their games this morning to secure 4th place.

Current standings after the 1pm games: Guernsey played the Cockney Rebels at 3pm for 5th and 6th place in the Mens Competitive Gold Final and won 16 – 14.

The final played at 5pm was between Puppies and Hoggs where Puppies won  24 – 7.  This made them the Men’s Competitive Platinum champions 2013.

BSF National Men’s Slowpitch 2013 – Day 1

Day one of the single sex BSF Nationals saw Guernsey win their first game against C-Rebels 22-4.

Guernsey were batting bottom and were 4-2 down after the 3rd innings. However, this was all to change when Guernsey started batting and C-Rebels were unable to score any more. There were 2 home runs from Marc Rihoy and 1 each from Shane Taylor, Jason Mariess and Ben Youlton.

Guernsey lost their 2nd game to Puppies 14-5.  They did not bat very well – Shane Taylor scored another home run for the Guernsey side.

Guernsey’s next game is at 2 o’clock. They are playing Hoggs (these are deemed to be their closest rivals as they lost out to them in the final last year). Hoggs also lost to Puppies earlier today.

The opening ceremony game is taking place at 4pm. Guernsey have been asked to play Godzillas and will have guest Colin Murray compering! See excerpt from the Slough Express (http://www.sloughexpress.co.uk/News/All-Areas/Farnhams/Colin-Murray-pitching-up-to-baseball-and-softball-launch-event-19072013.htm.

The results from the 2 o’clock game were Guernsey 7 v Hoggs 14, again Guernsey were just not using the bat well.

In the opening ceremony game Guernsey lost to Godzillas 6-5.

National Men’s Slowpitch Championships – 20th & 21st July 2013

Once again a male Island team is travelling across the water to compete in the National Men’s Slowpitch Championships being held at Farnham Park Playing Fields in Slough this weekend.  They are up against  5 other teams:-

Godzillas
Leeds Teabags
C-Rebels
Hoggs (possibly their closest rivals having lost out to them in the final last year)
Puppies

Island Coach, Steve Mahy has selected the following strong, versatile squad:-

Adam  Bullock
Ben Corson
Ian  Coutu
Ryan  De Jersey
Matt Dorey
Sam Machon
Jason Mariess
Dale Martel
Joseph Mauger
Miles Pengelley
Marc Rihoy
Shane Taylor
Ben Youlton

The Softball field at Farnham is new and there will be an official Opening Ceremony Game on Saturday (see below for more info).  Steve has been approached by the National Slowpitch Tournament organiser (Liz Graham) and asked if the Guernsey team would play the “Opening Game” against the Godzillas.  This is a great compliment to Steve and the team of last year, as the performance of play was outstanding.  In 2012 the Guernsey side won 7 of their 8 games, placing a very close second to Hoggs in the final.

Standard of play is expected to be high this year too, Steve has great confidence in his squad as they are strong in defense and solid at batting.  Another plus is their speed and experience in base running; this will hopefully give them the edge where needed.

Click here for the weekends schedule.

Attached is the link to the website, this will hopefully be updated by Liz throughout the weekend – http://www.bsf-nationals.org/

The Guernsey Softball Association wish the team the best of luck and look forward to a report on their return.

Semi-Final (1st place v 4th place)
Guernsey v Teabags
Score: 15 – 3 with home runs from Marc Rihoy and James Brehaut (the home run from James was so “big” it actually went over the outfield and into the infield of the pitch backing onto to their pitch!!).  This game also had the 5 runs an inning cap.

In the other semi-final (2nd place v 3rd place) Hoggs took on Godzillas to win a place in the Final against Guernsey.

Final
Guernsey v Hoggs
Score: 11 – 14
In the 1st inning Guernsey batted first scoring 5 runs and Hoggs scored 3.
Unfortunately luck (nor batting) was on Guernsey’s side and they didn’t score again for the next couple of innings.
The last few innings saw Guernsey score 2 or 3 runs per inning but it wasn’t to be.  Hoggs’ batting and fielding was better and this won them the game.

A disappointing end for the Guernsey Mens Team who, proir to the final, had won all seven games with excellent batting and fielding.  However, in spite of this loss, it was a very successful trip and Guernsey has made their mark on the UK softball tournament scene.

Let’s hope we see some of these teams come over to Guernsey to play in our tournaments next year!

BSF Men’s Nationals 2012 – Day 1

The tournament, which was meant to take place in Loughborough, was cancelled so the Guernsey team had to go to Manchester to play in the BSF Nationals tournament there.   Two other teams also billed to play in Loughborough – Godzillas and Hoggs – also went to Manchester.

These three teams had to be handicapped for this tournament; whereby they were only allowed to score 5 runs per inning.

The games Guernsey played today were:
Guernsey v Tripods
Score: 18 – 1 with a home run from Paul Vaudin

Guernsey v Teabags
Score: 17 – 12 with an automatic home run from James Brehaut (an ‘automatic home run’ is awarded when the ball is hit over the outfield fence)

Guernsey v Bobcats
Score: 16 – 3 with automatic home runs from Marc Rihoy and Jason Mariess

Guernsey v Camel Bulls
Score: 15 – 4 with automatic home runs from Jason Mariess (× 2) and James Brehaut.

Tomorrow sees Guernsey play 2 more teams in the round robin – Godzillas and Hoggs.  These games will have no handicaps as the teams were all meant to play in the tournament in Loughborough.

After these games the teams will be placed 1 – 7.  For the Platinum Competition, teams will be placed 1 – 4 (at this stage Guernsey will probably be placed at least 4th due to their four wins today although Hoggs looks like the team to beat!!).  The following games will then be played:

2nd place v 3rd place
1st place v 4th place.

The 2 Winners will play in the Platinum Final
The 2 Losers will play in the Gold Final

Scores from all the games played today:
Camel Bulls v Teabags (5 – 23)
Tripods v Guernsey (1 – 18)
Hoggs v Bobcats (20 – 1)
Hoggs v Godzillas (7 – 5)
Camel Bulls v Tripods (7 – 3)
Teabags v Guernsey (12 – 17)
Bobcats v Godzillas (8 – 11)

Guernsey v Bobcats (16 – 3)
Teabags v Hoggs (4 – 18)

BSF Men’s Nationals 2012 (Single Sex Slowpitch Softball)

This weekend, 21st & 22nd July, sees Steve Mahy take an Island Men’s Team across the water to Loughborough, Leicestershire to compete in the BSF Men’s Nationals (Single Sex Slowpitch Softball) – go to the BSF Nationals website for more information.

Sending a ‘men only’ Slowpitch Team away is a first for Guernsey but Steve has every confidence in his squad. They have great ability and all relish the idea of competing against different teams that they have not played against before.

Guernsey has entered into the top (Platinum) level; there are 5 other teams in this group. Day one will see them play a full round-robin followed by 2 groups of 3. Day two will be knockout stages, semi final and then finals.

Playing off Island is so important for our sport but it comes at a high cost (which has to be met by the individuals). This has however been aided by fund raising and the much appreciated sponsorship from:

Islands’ Insurance
ECA Associates
Michael D Nicolle & Partners Ltd
Norman Piette Ltd
Intersport
P F & A Ltd
Chateaux Estate Agents

The Island Men’s Squad representing Guernsey are:
